DECEMBER
Flower of the Month: Poinsettia

Do It Now!

*Plant holly, sweet peas, roses, phlox, cornflowers and petunias.
*Last month to plant bulbs.
*Plant tulips and hyacinths between Christmas and New Year.
*Many seeds to be sown in flats this month.
*Prepare new beds now to allow time for settling before being planted.
*Do not forget to water evergreens and lawns in the event there is a prolonged period of dry weather.

JANUARY
Flower of the Month - Carnation


Do It Now!

*Plant bulbs such as gladioli, iris, amaryllis and calla lilies. Plant pinks, larkspur, calendulas, cornflowers and verbena.
*Prune dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring bulbs swell.
*Set out camellias and azaleas.

FEBRUARY
Flower of the Month - Violet


Do It Now!

*Prune and feed roses, plant cosmos, candytuft, nasturtiums.
*Plant gladioli bulbs every two weeks this month and next for a succession of blooms. Fertilize lawn and trees.
* Spray with insecticides to prevent later infestation.
*Complete dormant season pruning of evergreens. Redbud and dogwood should be pruned after blooming. Overgrown abelias and tall nandinas should be heavily pruned, remove oldest canes at ground level.
*Fertilize lawn late in the month with complete fertilizer such as 8-8-8 applying 15 to 20 lbs. per sq. ft.
*Check new plant growth for aphids.
*Use dormant spray on fruit and nut trees. Prune all fruit trees.

The Columbus Garden Club is primarily concerned with the beautification of the City of Columbus, Texas and with special projects in Colorado County. The purpose of our club is to stimulate the knowledge and love of gardening among amateurs; to aid in the protection of native trees, plants and birds; to encourage civic landscapting; and to support the objectives and purposes of the National Garden Clubs and the Texas Garden Club, Inc.
