Welcome from Sharon Wegenhoft, President

The Columbus Garden Club is excited to be celebrating our 75th year in 2011-2012.  Organized in 1936, our club serves the city of Columbus, Texas through our numerous beautification projects as well as developing friendships among our members and providing plant education for both members and interested citizens.

Our main concern is landscaping and maintaining nine city parks and pocket parks and one county park, but the club is involved in numerous activities:

We sponsor an annual Arbor Day, with 69 trees planted since 1941; our “Yard of the Month” and “Business of the Month” programs encourage  beautification of residential and commercial properties; annual scholarships are given to graduating high school seniors entering horticulture or environmentally related fields of study to help assure that garden club objectives will continue into the future; assisting our local historical preservation society by annually decorating one of  their historic homes and providing docents during their Christmas homes tour demonstrates our floral design skills to the community; our annual “Trash Off” which has won state awards, involves businesses, the government and more than 250 citizens of our community; our work with the Girl Scouts in landscape design and assisting the Columbus Elementary school in  developing  a recycle program keeps us in touch with the youth of our town; our committees that provide flowers and cards to  local nursing homes and hospitals remind seniors through lovely floral arrangements that they are not forgotten. These are only a few of our many activities.

Even with all of the  horticulture projects and community concern activities, our club has a very social side as well. Our tours and our Christmas party provide social interaction for our members outside of our meetings.  We have 84 members as of this writing and continue to grow.  Although we are known for our gardening skills and community activities, our club is also simply FUN.

We welcome visitors and new members. For more information about our club, or help with gardening questions, email or complete the online form on the Contact Us page on this website.

Happy Gardening,

Sharon
