Projects

The Columbus Garden Club is primarily concerned with the beautification of the City of Columbus and special projects in Colorado County; therefore, projects are identified and chosen with the goal of achieving the following objectives:

1.  Protect and conserve natural resources
2.  Promote civic beautification
3.  Improve roadsides and parks
4.  Use native plants that conserve water

A Look Back:
In the Spring of 2008, Texas Garden Clubs, Inc. raised the rank of the Columbus Garden Club from "Bronze" to "Silver" based on our many community projects. The Mayor and City Council of Columbus issued a Proclamation stating that the Club "...has served as a powerful positive influence on the beautification of the City of Columbus and has greatly improved the quality of life of the residents of and visitors to the city." The Colorado County Commissioner’s Court issued a proclamation “recognizing Columbus
Garden Club for its many Community Beautification Projects including annual Arbor Day Tree Plantings, Beason’s Crossing Park Garden, Historic Court Oak Garden, and the Mansfield Building Pocket Garden.


Past projects include:

*Landscaping at Beason's Crossing Historic Park in Colorado County

*Landscaping and Maintaining Blue Star Memorial on the Courthouse Square

*Awarding a "Yard of the Month" sign to the outstanding residential yard

*Awarding a "Business of the Month" sign to a commercial site
*Awarding an "Outstanding Civic Beautification" sign to public locations
*Providing a free consulting services for businesses
*Designing, installing and maintaining a Butterfly Garden and pocket parks in Mid Town Park
*Maintaining a pocket park on Montezuma Street
*Working with the Girl Scout Cadet Troup 2600 in designing, installing and maintaining a pocket park at historic Mansfield Library.
*Sponsoring an annual "Trash Off" in cooperation with the City of Columbus and Columbus to 
encourage businesses to
 clean up the city of Columbus
*Sponsoring an annual Arbor Day with a tree planting ceremony honoring a Columbus Citizen in order to encourage planting of trees in Columbus.
*Decorating and conducting tours in period theme for an historic Columbus
*Sponsoring an annual Plant Sale with plants donated from members and friends yards to raise club funds, educate the public and encourage citizens to "green up" Columbus.
*Observing National Garden Club Week

*Preserving the Courthouse Square Crepe Myrtles
*Landscaping of the historical Oak Tree and Horse Trough on the Courthouse Square
*Maintaining planter boxes around the Courthouse Square


MISSION STATEMENT
The Columbus Garden Club is primarily concerned with the beautification of the City of Columbus, Texas and with special projects in Colorado County. The purpose of our club is to stimulate the knowledge and love of gardening among amateurs; to aid in the protection of native trees, plants and birds; to encourage civic landscapting; and to support the objectives and purposes of the National Garden Clubs and the Texas Garden Club, Inc.
